How to quit vaping - Down to 3mg nicotine but still totally hooked

Hey everyone,

I think I’m fully addicted to vaping, and I don’t know how to break free.

I started with disposables, then switched to rechargeable devices. I began at 20mg nicotine, and managed to step down to 10mg, then 6mg, and now I’m at 3mg. But honestly? I’m still just as hooked as ever.

I vape constantly throughout the day. I work in an office where I can vape right at my desk, so there’s almost no barrier. Even though the nicotine level is really low now, I don’t think nicotine is even the main problem anymore. I think it’s the act itself – especially the fruit flavors. Something about those sweet, fruity tastes just keeps me reaching for my vape over and over again.

I feel like I’ve done the “right” thing by lowering my nicotine, but it hasn’t reduced my dependence at all. Has anyone else been through this? How do you quit when it’s not really about the nicotine anymore? Any tips for breaking the behavioral / flavor addiction?

Thanks in advance.

Buy 0 mg nicotine e-liquid, CBD e-liquid, or something similar, and mix it with your current e-liquid. Gradually increase the proportion of nicotine-free liquid until you’re no longer using nicotine at all. After about a week without nicotine, you’ll likely stop craving it.

Try using a really unpleasant flavor so you start to separate the taste and sensation from nicotine. You’ll likely end up vaping less, and either quit entirely or keep switching to flavors you don’t enjoy until you no longer feel like vaping at all.

Being at 3mg and still hooked is actually very common - congratulations on getting this far! Going from a pack-a-day to 3mg is already a huge achievement. Here is how to close the final gap:

The Final Stretch: Going from 3mg to Zero

1. Taper, dont cold turkey
Jumping from 3mg to 0mg often feels abrupt. Instead try:

  • Mix 3mg and 0mg juice 50/50 for 1.5mg for 2 weeks
  • Then mix 25/75 for about 0.75mg for another 2 weeks
  • Then switch to 0mg

2. Address the habit, not just the nicotine
At 3mg the addiction is mostly behavioral at this point. Try:

  • Keep a 0mg vape handy for when the hand-to-mouth habit kicks in
  • Replace some vape sessions with gum, water, or breathing exercises
  • Identify your trigger moments (after meals? with coffee? during work breaks?) and consciously break those associations one at a time

3. Set micro-goals
Instead of setting a vague quit date, try:

  • Week 1: no vaping before 10am
  • Week 2: no vaping before noon
  • Week 3: designated vape times only (3-4 set times per day)

4. What helped others
Many former vapors say the key was replacing the ritual rather than fighting it - same hand motion with a pen or toothpick, same break time but with a walk instead.

You have already done the hardest part (getting down to 3mg). The rest is mostly about habit retraining, which is genuinely easier than the nicotine withdrawal you already conquered.

Anyone else have tips for making the final jump from 3mg to 0mg?
